Treat Yo’ Self

Day 7 of SOLSC #treatyoself

This evening I went to the hair salon and got my hair cut and highlighted. I haven’t been to the salon since August. It was wonderful.

It was not busy there tonight. Quiet and not too peopley. After we discussed what I wanted to do, she mixed up the color, and told me to just sit there and read the book I brought along while she foiled up my hair. We didn’t have to have awkward small talk, “unless you want to talk, that is fine too,” she offered. It was nice to be told to sit there and read instead of wondering if it would be rude. Side note: we did have some nice conversations too, I didn’t completely ignore her. Amazing.

I also had a paraffin dip as a part of their added experiences. While my hair was processing, my hands were gloved up and covered in moisturizing wax. I couldn’t turn the pages in my book. I couldn’t do anything but sit there. I stared off into space without any interruptions; this is seriously underrated. I eavesdropped on other people’s conversations; a new mom having her baby shower this weekend and it will be the first grandchild in the family reminding me of my own first born. I watched through the window people coming and going to the pizza place next door; seeing this made me so happy that tomorrow is Friday and Pizza For Dinner. Glorious.

There were two parts of tonight’s salon experience that were beyond fantastic. 1. Sitting under the dryer. Warm, cozy, white noise, and a book. I mean, what could be better? 2. Getting my hair washed is one of my favorite things. But tonight it was extra long because she put some sort of hair treatment in so the rinsing and inadvertent scalp massage was so lengthy I almost fell asleep. Relaxing.

After having such an enjoyable two and a half hours getting my hair done tonight, I realize I really need to treat myself much more often.

Your post shows how you are living as a writer. It seems you were so aware as you had your hair done and captured the atmosphere so well. I feel like I am there!

    1. Sara Royston says:

Thank you, Sally. I’m glad you enjoyed it. I know I did. 🙂

  2. Kathleen says:

Oh this is so lovely! It makes me want to book my next hair appointment. I am so glad you had this experience!

    1. Sara Royston says:

Thanks, Kathleen! Make that hair appointment. You deserve it. 🙂
